Veolia Water Technologies & Solutions

ZeeWeed* Submerged Ultrafiltration Membranes

Delivering sustainable water treatment through innovation

Veolia's submerged ultrafiltration (UF) portfolio offers two distinct solutions designed for different treatment challenges:

ZeeWeed 500D UF membranes represents the pinnacle of membrane engineering with its reinforced Polyvinylidene Fluoride (PVDF) fibers. With an industry-leading fiber strength of 600N, it offers unmatched solids tolerance that eliminates the need for pre-treatment. This innovative design allows direct filtration of high-solids waters, making it the most robust ultrafiltration solution available.

ZeeWeed 1000 UF membrane is optimized for large-scale municipal applications, particularly in drinking water and wastewater tertiary filtration. Its submerged design operates under vacuum, enabling creative hydraulic configurations that minimize energy consumption and simplify operations. The system's compact footprint delivers significant total cost of ownership benefits through reduced real estate requirements.

ZeeWeed submerged systems leverage vacuum-driven operation to maximize energy efficiency and operational flexibility, setting new standards for sustainable water treatment

ZeeWeed 1000 UF Membrane

ZeeWeed 1000 membranes produce superior water quality and are virtually unaffected by variable raw water quality - all at a cost comparable to conventional filtration options. A solution utilizing ZeeWeed 1000 membranes combines extreme footprint intensity with low operating costs for a membrane filtration solution with unmatched total life cost efficiency.

ZeeWeed 1000 UF Membrane Benefits

Water often contains particles, bacteria, and viruses that make it unsafe for drinking and unsuitable for industrial use. ZeeWeed submerged ultrafiltration membranes remove these contaminants while maintaining essential water minerals.

In submerged ultrafiltration, membrane fibers are immersed directly in the water to be treated, arranged in cassettes within a tank. A gentle vacuum draws water through the microscopic pores of the membrane, effectively filtering out unwanted particles and micro-organisms while allowing clean water to pass through. This simple but effective design works like a very fine filter, producing high-quality water suitable for drinking or further treatment.

What makes submerged ultrafiltration particularly efficient is its flexible operating approach. The system can run using traditional pump suction, or in many cases, can operate purely through natural siphon effect - using gravity to drive filtration. This innovative use of hydraulics significantly reduces energy consumption and operational complexity while maintaining superior filtration performance.

Olivenhain Water Filtration - Membrane and Plant Upgrade

Olivenhain Municipal Water District's water treatment facility upgraded from an old ZeeWeed 500 UF model to ZeeWeed 500D UF membrane between 2008-2013. The upgrade increased membrane surface area by 30% within the existing footprint and achieved LT2 compliance without requiring operational changes. The 34 MGD plant maintains over 99% recovery through its two-stage system.

Samsung Electronics Semiconductor Manufacturing Facility

Samsung Electronics chose Veolia's ZeeWeed 500 UF membrane system to pretreat variable surface water for their semiconductor facility in Korea. The ultrafiltration system consistently delivers high-quality water (SDI < 3, turbidity < 1.0 NTU) for RO feed and potable use, with over 98% recovery and ability to handle high turbidity, while requiring minimal space and maintenance. The system's performance reduces RO maintenance needs and efficiently serves both process and drinking water needs through a single treatment step.

Auckland Secures Future Water Supply with ZeeWeed UF River Treatment Plant

To meet Auckland's growing water needs, Watercare Services implemented Veolia's ZeeWeed 500 UF membranes at their Waikato River plant in 1999. The 12 MGD facility uses a multi-barrier treatment process including coagulation, clarification, ultrafiltration, and GAC filtration to transform challenging river water into high-quality drinking water. The plant is designed for future expansion up to 40 MGD capacity.

Spanish Resort Town Conserves Drinking Water Through Advanced Wastewater Recycling

In 2003, Benidorm, Spain implemented a water reuse project using Veolia's ZeeWeed 1000 ultrafiltration membrane system to treat municipal wastewater for irrigation. The six-train system produces high-quality water for reverse osmosis treatment, helping preserve scarce potable water resources for the city's residents and tourists. The treated water can be blended with RO permeate for irrigation or discharged to the Mediterranean Sea.

Canadian Municipality Builds World-Class Membrane Plant to Meet Population Growth

The Region of Peel expanded its Lakeview Water Treatment Plant to serve its growing population, implementing Veolia's ZeeWeed ultrafiltration alongside ozonation and biologically active carbon treatment. The expansion increased capacity to 96 MGD while maintaining the existing footprint, making it one of the world's largest UF membrane plants. The multi-barrier system provides over 600,000 consumers with high-quality drinking water that exceeds Ontario's safety standards.

Melton Hill WTP Boosts Plant Performance by Upgrading Competitor Membranes to Veolia’s ZeeWeed 1000 Membranes

Hallsdale-Powell Utility District (HPUD) upgraded their troubled Melton Hill Water Treatment Plant in Tennessee by replacing competitor membranes with Veolia's ZW1000 UF membranes in 2015. Based on positive experiences with Veolia systems at their other facilities, HPUD chose the ZW1000 membranes for its compatibility with existing infrastructure and proven performance record, completing the upgrade within two weeks.
